South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. has acquired U.S.-based digital healthcare company Xealth as part of an effort to strengthen its connected care strategy.
Connected care is a service that links health data collected from wearable devices - such as Galaxy smartphones, watches, and rings - with medical services and wellness management, allowing users to monitor their health and prevent diseases more easily.
Samsung Electronics announced on Tuesday that it has signed an acquisition agreement with Xealth, with the transaction expected to be finalized within 2025. The acquisition is reportedly worth hundreds of billions of won.
With this deal in hand, Samsung plans to accelerate its push into personalized, comprehensive healthcare services by integrating data from its wearables with digital healthcare platforms.
Xealth currently partners with over 500 hospitals across the United States and works with around 70 digital healthcare solution companies in areas such as diabetes, pregnancy, and surgery. It connects hospitals’ electronic health record systems, enabling medical staff to recommend health management apps, digital content, and medical devices to patients while monitoring usage in real time.
Its platform allows hospitals to distribute digital health solutions directly within their systems and analyze patient group data to evaluate treatment effectiveness. Hospitals using Xealth, in fact, have reported patient engagement rates rising by over 60 percent.
Doctors at partner hospitals, for example, can recommend apps that help diabetes patients manage blood sugar and lifestyle habits, offering a comprehensive view of their condition.
Samsung Electronics’ goal with connected care is to empower users to take control of their health and prevent illness. As the service expands, the gap between daily health data and clinical medical records could be bridged, leading to stronger connections between patients and healthcare providers.
Looking ahead, Samsung Electronics plans to link its digital healthcare ecosystem with its consumer electronics to offer even more personalized services.
“Samsung aims to improve the health of everyone through our extensive platform combining our innovative technologies and open collaboration with industry leaders,” Roh Tae-moon, president and acting head of the device experience division at Samsung Electronics, said. “We believe the acquisition of Xealth, with its accumulated expertise and extensive healthcare network, will be an anchor to accelerate Samsung’s efforts to support health systems and digital health partners through a truly connected care.”
The digital healthcare market is rapidly growing, driven in part by global population aging.
According to market research firm Global Information, the global digital healthcare market is expected to reach $266.8 billion in 2025 and grow at a rate of 20 percent annually to total $1.03 trillion by 2032.
Samsung also acquired French AI startup Sonio in May 2024 via its medical equipment subsidiary Samsung Medison.
According to Xealth, over 27 million digital health solutions were delivered to patients through its platform to date, with over 200,000 healthcare providers and more than 6 million patients using the service.
Moving forward, healthcare professionals using connected care will be able to integrate Samsung Health’s wearable data into hospital treatment via the Xealth platform.
“We are excited to join forces with Samsung,” Xealth CEO Mike McSherry said. “Xealth and Samsung share a common goal to advance the digital health space for truly connected care. Customer health data from wearables can fill in context that is missing to hospitals and bring more data analysis possibilities that were not available just with clinical records.”
McSherry noted that together with Samsung and its network of healthcare leaders, “we will design a bridge between home health monitoring and clinical decision-making, with provider workflow considerations and patient engagement at the core of that effort.”
