South Korean President Lee Jae-myung will attend the upcoming Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada, marking his debut on the international diplomatic stage since taking office, presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said on June 7.

The summit is scheduled for June 15 to 17 in Kananaskis, Alberta. Although South Korea is not a G7 member, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, this year’s host, indicated last month that South Korea and Australia might be invited. U.S. President Donald Trump is also expected to participate.

Kang declined to reveal when the invitation was received, citing diplomatic sensitivities. “We accepted the invitation, and today was the right time to make it public,” she said.

When asked about the possibility of Lee attending the NATO summit scheduled for June 24–25 in the Netherlands, Kang said a decision would be shared once discussions are more advanced.

She also confirmed that a special envoy to the United States is being considered, though no official details have been finalized.

In a separate announcement, Kang said the Lee administration will restore the number of journalists allowed to board the presidential aircraft to the level maintained under the Moon Jae-in government, reversing reductions made during the Yoon administration.
