"Yadang: The Snitch" leads Korean box office

The crime action film Yadang: The Snitch has stormed the box office, setting the highest opening weekend record among Korean films released this year.

According to the Korean Film Council on April 21, the film, which opened on April 16, drew 608,140 moviegoers from April 18 to 20, topping the weekend box office. This marks the best opening weekend performance for a Korean release in 2024, surpassing the previous record of 589,488 set by the occult horror film The Black Nuns starring Song Hye-kyo during the Lunar New Year holiday. Among all films released in Korea this year, Yadang ranks second, following Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 (980,514 viewers).

Directed and written by Hwang Byung-gook—known for Wedding Campaign and Special Investigations UnitYadang: The Snitch unfolds a tense power play among a drug broker, a prosecutor, and a detective. Kang Ha-neul plays Lee Kang-soo, a slick broker navigating between prosecutors and drug rings. Yoo Hae-jin stars as Gu Gwan-hee, an ambitious prosecutor, while Park Hae-joon portrays Oh Sang-jae, a dogged detective. The trio's dynamic performances and the film’s fast-paced rhythm have earned strong praise from audiences.

Yadang: The Snitch is expected to sustain its momentum through the coming weekend. As of the morning of April 21, it ranked third in advance ticket sales with an 18.6% share, behind Holy Night: Demon Hunters (26.4%) and Fracture (19.8%)—both of which are set to open on April 30.
