Megastore franchise Emart to open third store in Viet Nam

SEOUL -- Emart, the megastore wing of South Korea's retail conglomerate Shinsegae, will open its third store in Viet Nam in about a year after the launch of its first store in November 2022. Visitors can enjoy various types of food products such as pizza and Gimbap, a Korean dish of rice and other ingredients such as vegetables and meat wrapped in sheets of laver.

Emart said in a statement that the third store, located in Ho Chi Minh City, will start operations on December 7. The megastore of about 6,930 square meters, which is around the size of a soccer field, also sells products from No Brand, a budget food and daily supplies brand, and agricultural products like strawberries. The company said an average of 300 pizzas and 500 rolls of Gimbap were sold per day at its first store.

Emart plans to expand the range of products from No Brand to meet demands for South Korean products among Vietnamese consumers. At its second Vietnamese store, the proportion of No Brand sales accounted for about 10 percent of the total amount. The megastore operator has also launched its business in Mongolia. A total of four stores are in operation in Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia.

South Korean convenience store operators are also striving to expand their markets into different Asian regions. BGF Retail, the operator of South Korea's major convenience store franchise CU, was operating 300 stores in Mongolia and 130 stores in Malaysia as of March of this year. The Mongolian shop in Ulaanbaatar sells South Korean-style fried dishes as well as Tteokbokki, finger-sized rice cakes simmered in fiery-red spicy chili sauce.
