Samsung Electronics Co. on Thursday has started the rollout of the Game Optimizing Service (GOS) update to enable Galaxy S22 owners an option to chuck away performance throttling function that had been implanted in the new premium phones to lessen battery overheating issue.
The software update has been released on Thursday, although unannounced through the official community websites of Samsung Electronics.
Upon the update, Galaxy S22 users now are able to deactivate the performance-first option or use a separate app to turn off the GOS app for better playing of high-performance games. The device control to prevent overheating however will stay unchanged.
GOS app is designed to adjust CPU and GPU performances to avoid overheating and excessive power consumption in the case of playing high-performance games for a long time. The previous smartphone models also had to function, but users were able to turn off the app with a separate app.
Some users still complain about the latest update, saying the performance has not been improved yet and overheating also has not been addressed. Update rollout without notice and information also is one of the complaints.
Roh Tae-moon, president and head of MX business at Samsung Electronics, on the same day explained the GOS function and related issues to its employees and apologized for lack of communications with them.
The issue is expected to be dealt at the upcoming shareholders’ meeting due on March 16.
Some of the Galaxy S22 users earlier brought the case to the Fair Trade Commission, claiming Samsung has misled consumers through ads on Galaxy S22, which says the model boasts record performance while restricting the performance with the GOS function.
Some others are preparing class action against the company for damages of 300,000 won ($243.13) per one.
Samsung Electronics shares fell 1.69 percent to close Friday at 70,000 won.
