LG Electronics partners with KAIST, Keysight on 6G development

LG Electronics Inc. has partnered with Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and Keysight Technologies to make headway in 6G technologies.

The Korean electronics giant on Tuesday signed a partnership agreement with Keysight Technologies Inc., a U.S.-based electronics test and measurement equipment provider, and KAIST, state-run elite science and tech university in Korea.

Under the agreement, the three parties will cooperate on the development of technologies related to terahertz, a key frequency band for 6G communication network, and a verification system. They will set up test infrastructure, upgrade measuring equipment and study the environment of radio waves from this year to 2024.

The 6G wireless communication network is the next-generation network technology that would replace the latest 5G cellular technology. It is expected to be 50 times faster than 5G and only a tenth of the latency of 5G, enabling faster and more reliable data transmission.

Discussion on standardization of 6G is expected to start taking place in 2025, and its commercialization is expected in 2029, according to LG Electronics.

LG Electronics already set up a 6G research center with KAIST in January 2019. The two also partnered up with the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science to study 6G technologies in August last year.

In January, the Korean government vowed to spend 200 billion won ($176.4 million) to support the development of 6G technologies over the next five years.
