Six out of 10 aged 15 to 24 in South Korea watch video contents through streaming on phones and other gadgets instead of TV, according to a survey by top wireless carrier SK Telecom on Wednesday.

Nearly two thirds or 62.5 percent of Generation Z members born between 1996 and 2005 spend more time watching content through OTT video streaming services than through TV, the survey showed. In OTT channels, content is delivered via an internet connection rather than through a traditional cable or broadcast provider.

More than half or 56.6 percent of millennials born between 1986 and 1995 responded they use OTT more often than TV. And 28.3 percent of millennials said they spend equal time on each content-watching methodology while 11.9 percent said they prefer TV.

The preference for OTT services was no difference in Generation X members born between 1966 and 1985. About 42 percent of them said they watch content through OTT more than through TV and 25.7 percent said OTT and TV are almost equally used.

In contrast, baby boomers born between 1951 and 1965 showed a high preference for traditional TV with 39.2 percent preferring TV to OTT. Only 26.2 percent of this age group said they watch OTT programs more often.

The survey also showed that a smartphone is the most used device for OTT watching with 60 percent in all age groups, followed by a notebook in Generation Z and by TV in Generation X and baby boomers.

Netflix was the most used OTT service in all age groups, followed by Wavve.
