[윤희영의 News English] 그린란드의 숨겨진 ‘아킬레스건’

트럼프 미국 대통령이 온갖 무리수를 둬가며(resort to all sorts of unreasonable tactics) 그린란드 병합 야심을 노골화하고(blatantly reveal his ambition) 있는 가운데, 그의 심산에 변수(a variable in his ulterior motive)가 될 수도 있는 그린란드의 ‘아킬레스건(Achilles’ heel)’이 발견됐다.

국제 학술지 ‘Geology(지질학)’ 최신호에 발표된 연구 결과에 따르면, 그린란드는 빙상(氷床·ice sheet) 아래 흙과 모래로 이뤄진 거대한 퇴적층(sediment layer)이 빙하의 붕괴를 가속화하고 지하자원 채굴(extraction of underground resources)을 어렵게 하는 지질학적 취약점(geological weakness)을 갖고 있는 것으로 조사됐다. 중국과 러시아 견제를 위한 전략적 이유(strategic reason)뿐 아니라 석유·금·흑연·구리·철·희토류(rare earth elements) 등 풍부한 지하자원을 탐내(covet its abundant underground resources) 그린란드에 눈독을 들여온(cast covetous eyes on it) 트럼프의 북극 접수 각본(Arctic playbook)이 예기치 못한 불확실성에 봉착한 것이다.

트럼프 행정부는 그린란드를 ‘전략적 요충지(strategic foothold)’이자 ‘천연자원 보물창고(treasure trove of natural resources)’로 점찍고 덴마크로부터 ‘매입’을 모색해왔다. 빙상 아래 매장된 지하자원이 미국의 에너지 안보(energy security)에도 큰 도움이 될 것으로 판단했다. 그런데 과학자들이 ‘그린란드의 아킬레스건’으로 명명한 지질학적 취약점이 드러나면서(come to light) 미국의 자원 강국 구상에 찬물을 끼얹은(throw a wet blanket on it) 것이다.

단단한 암반(solid bedrock)이 아닌 연약한 퇴적층 지반은 지하자원 채굴의 최대 걸림돌(greatest obstacle to underground resource extraction)이다. 안전한 시추를 위해서는 빙상 아래 밑바닥이 기반암이어야 한다. 흐물흐물한 흙과 모래층은 채굴용 드릴의 날이 막히게 하고(clog drill bits) 잦은 장비 손상과 붕괴 위험(collapse risk)을 초래해 작업 중단을 반복하게 한다(force repeated shutdowns of operations). 게다가 흙·모래 퇴적층이 윤활유 같은 역할을 하면서(act like a lubricant) 대형 빙하가 바다로 미끄러져 떨어지는 횟수가 빈번해져 해상 석유 시추 시설(offshore oil drilling facilities)도 막대한 위험과 비용 상승(enormous risks and sharply rising costs)에 직면하게 된다.

빙상 밑 200m 깊이까지 쌓여 있는 흙·모래 퇴적층이 아이러니하게도 트럼프의 그린란드 병합 행보에 예상치 못한 장애물로 떠올랐다(emerge as an unexpected obstacle). 그린란드의 아킬레스건이 트럼프의 아킬레스건이 될지, 아니면 트럼프의 전략적·경제적 이익 추구(pursuit of strategic and economic gains)가 자연의 한계를 넘어설(overcome the limits imposed by nature) 수 있을지 주목된다.
