President Lee Jae-myung will host a luncheon meeting with leaders of both ruling and opposition parties on Jan. 16 at Cheong Wa Dae, the presidential office said Monday, adding that the People Power Party has yet to respond to the invitation.
Presidential Secretary for Political Affairs Kim Byung-wook announced the schedule during a press briefing at the Chunchugwan press center, saying the president invited leaders from parties including the Democratic Party of Korea, the People Power Party, the Reform Party, the Rebuilding Korea Party, the Progressive Party, the Basic Income Party and the Social Democratic Party.
According to Kim, President Lee plans to share the administration’s key policy directions for the year and discuss bipartisan cooperation aimed at economic recovery, improving livelihoods and stabilizing state affairs.
“Last year was a time of recovery and growth, focused on reviving a weakened economy and people’s livelihoods,” Kim said. “This year, the president intends to concentrate national momentum on delivering tangible changes the public can feel and laying the groundwork for a major national leap forward, while seeking political cooperation to that end.”
Kim noted, however, that the People Power Party has not yet replied to the presidential office’s invitation. He added that Reform Party leader Lee Jun-seok has declined to attend due to an overseas schedule, while floor leader Cheon Ha-ram will participate.
Asked whether the presidential office would further encourage the People Power Party to attend, Kim said Cheong Wa Dae remains open to dialogue at any time. Citing a previous meeting between the president and party leaders, he said the administration would “wait patiently” until the scheduled date and expressed hope that the opposition would ultimately join the talks.
